Columbus Day on Ritidian Beach

Here we are on Columbus Day Weekend enjoying Ritidian Beach.  A pretty secluded preserve with some of the best coral on Guam.

Above you’ll see the barrier reef that surrounds most of Guam.  The makes for very little waves (unfortunately), but also protects the island from tsunamis.  Even though Guam is 3,000 miles closer to Japan than Hawaii, Hawaii saw a greater impact from the most recent Japan tsunami, thanks in part to the protective reef.

Day 1 (Jed & Alyssa’s Tour of Guam)

Aerial of Umatac Bridge and Bay Guam - click here to see other beautiful aerial views and a closer view of  the Spanish Bridge, where Magellan landed, that got cut off.  We went under this bridge to get to Umatac Park to see the Carabou and pics of some cannons you’ll see below.

Where to begin!

So much happened in so little time, that’s it’s hard to know where to begin!  As Julie Andrews would say, from Sound of Music, “Let’s Start at the very begining”.

Jed & Alyssa’s Tour of Guam

We took Marc and Cyndi back to our place to catch some Z’ssss!  We woke up every morning around 5:00am, which was Jed and I’s normal morning routine, but for Marc and Cyndi it went a little differently.  You can just imagine the jet lag, with having a 14 hr. difference in time and all!  Guam is 14 Hrs. ahead, and Marc and Cyndi were waking up at like 1-2am every morning, but by the end of the week they were adjusting just fine.  We’re all morning people and were raring to go each morning, which is good for me because I had to teach Pilates classes every morning between 6:30-8:30am and Cyndi even came to one of my 6:30am classes and I taught her for a full hour…………She was great……….I wish I would have taken a picture:) (Sadie, you shouldn’t be suprised to know that I couldn’t even get your dad to the studio)!  He said ” I would rather have a Root Canal”!!………….I had to laugh:)  Even though we’re all morning people, you should have seen us every night!……………We all looked like zombies

Stop number 1, a relaxing tour of Guam’s Southern side of the Island! (Jed and Alyssa’s Tour of Guam)  We rented an SUV for the 2 weeks and got lucky with a nice ride.  The SUV was very spacious and could hold all of our snorkle and dive equipment.  Jed was the driver, and did great!  It’s debatable wheather or not he got lost, but all in all a great tour, so much so, we had the LAM LAM Tour Bus following us the entire way, which had 1 Japanise couple inside.  There was much talk how the Tsunami in Japan effected our tourism here in Guam!

The Southern side is very beautiful and lush and green!  There aren’t as many businesses and houses, just a lot of beautiful land.  It was a beautiful day and we drove right along side of the coast stopping at many lookout sights.  Our first was Cetti Bay overlook, followed by Umatac Park, (where Marc and Cyndi saw there first Carabou), and also drove under the Spanish Bridge, where Magellan first landed.  Along the way we saw TUBA for sale.  Don’t ask!………I think it’s a drink that comes from the coconut tree and it doesn’t sound good, but is very popular here.

We were all starting to get hungry and stopped in at the famous local restaurant Jeff’s Pirate Cove!  They are known for having the best hamburgers on the island, they have a wonderful view of the ocean, while you enjoy great drinks and great food.  It has a great local feel to the place, as they play island music, and have a gift shop near by.

We were enjoying our great lunch, when we noticed a diver coming out of the ocean.  He had on a wet suit, which you really don’t need here, considering the ocean is always at a constant 84 degrees.  Warmer than even Hawaii!  As he got closer, we saw he had 2-3 fish hanging from the side of his wet suit, and they were a good size fish:)  That was the talk of the day!  The boys got into talking about spear fishing, and how Jed was going to start catching all of our fish, so it can be nice and fresh!  He’s already been eyeing some spear guns on-line and in stores.  He’s on a mission to catch some Mahi Mahi:)  Unfortunately, we didn’t get a picture of this guy with the fish, but we got some other really nice pics for you all to see.  If this guy works for Jef’s Pirate Cove, talk about having some fresh fish for lunch when you eat here!  It was a great experience and I would go again and again!

We were starting to make our way back home after seeing some of the beautiful Southern sights of the island, plus our bellies were full! On the way home we stopped by a local market to get fresh fish for the next day (The Co-Op).  We got Mahi Mahi and cooked it up the next day on Jed and I’s new grill and it was delicious.

What a great way to spend the first day here with Marc and Cyndi!  It was very low-key and the Hutchison’s were finally able to see what we’ve been talking about for the past 3 months.  Marc thought Guam was a lot bigger than he expected and Cyndi noticed many poor homes in nice areas, and beautiful homes in poor areas.  You see that a lot here.  The weather is so hard on buildings, that people don’t have enough $ to keep up with it all, including the Gov’t.  I have never seen so many pot-holes!…………..It’s very hard on our BMW and makes for a rough ride:)  All in all, Marc and Cyndi thought the island was beautiful!!

Our First Visitors on Guam

Hafa Adai!

Half-a-day is the pronunciation.  Meaning Hello or welcome in Chamorro, the native language of Guam.

Welcome Marc and Cyndi Hutchison!!!

It was such a delight to pick them up at the airport and see their smiling faces:)  They may have gotten off the plane straight from Maine, as white as white can be, but they sure left darker than both Jed and I, and we’ve been here for 3 1/2 months!

These past 2 weeks have been nothing short of amazing.  After the long flight Marc and Cyndi had to endure, it was nice to be greeted by Guam’s hot and humid air, and the beautiful views of the ocean right from the airport!  The past two weeks were jammed packed full of excitement!

Beach hopped to 6 different beaches to snorkel and dive, including having a pick-nick lunch at Fish Eye on Easter.

Tried many Local restaurants that had amazing food and views of Guam!

This is just to name a few!!  It was very exciting to share so many first time moments on Guam with Marc and Cyndi.  Almost everything we did, we were doing for the first time and enjoyed every second!!  That shows you how little sight-seeing we’ve done since we’ve been here!……That’s just sad!

I hate to admit it, but by the end of the trip, Jed and I were taking extra naps and falling asleep first at the end of the day.  Marc and Cyndi, you wore us out, but we wouldn’t have changed a thing:)

Thanks to Marc and Jed, Jed and I will try to recapture the vacation as best we can, through video and pictures to share with all of you!  Hope you enjoy the footage to follow through the week!!

This may have been the first family visit on Guam, but we hope it won’t be the last!  If you’re feeling like you need a vacation, and you’re up for an adventure please let us know, because we have a room waiting for you!!

We Love and Miss You All!!

Home Sweet Home

After much thought on the color scheme for the living room and dining room, this is the color we decided on for the dining room.  It’s a beautiful light shade of blue, and we really like how it came out.  The living room is another light hue of blue, but in the pics. it just comes out looking like white.  We painted these two rooms when we first moved in, which is about a month ago.

This is a pic. of the BEAUTIFUL SPOTTED LAVENDER ORCHID my husband gave me on Valentines Day!  He knows it’s one of my favorite flowers:)  I am so blessed to have a husband who feels I resemble this orchid by the delicate nature I portray all the way to the freckles on my face!  I feel so loved!…………..THANK YOU HONEY!!

I just finished this bedroom over the long weekend!  Jed worked from home all day Mon. and I painted!….and painted….and painted!  It took me all day, but I finished:)  You can’t tell from the pic., but I went with a tropical lime green.  I know, bold choice, but it’s a great guest room color and it gives the room a tropical feel.  Though, it’s slightly darker than I wanted.  When I first put the paint on the wall, I realized that’s the color I wanted, and when it dried it was slightly too dark.  I guess I will have to settle on less than perfect with this room, oh well, much as life!………..Not everything can be perfect!  I’ll make it work!……I’m not painting that room again!!

Making a home your own:)

So many choices!  Should I paint? ( after living in Apt’s for 7 years, where we knew we wouldn’t be there long enough to paint or they wouldn’t allow us to paint, this decision came very easy!) YES…YES…YES!

What colors too paint?  This one not so easy!  This was harder than the actual act of painting, which I realize I love to do!  Wow!  Something that actually saves us money for once:)

What style of furniture?…………Can you mix different finishes?…………Will it go with the furniture we already have?  Not to mention, all the shipping issues to Guam, which really limits us on our selection.  (We’ve discovered JC Penny’s, Pottery barn (select items), Old Navy, Crate and Barrel, and Amazon (select items)will ship here and nothing else………At this point, I’m just glad we at least have those stores.  I haven’t been this overwhelmed with decisions since my wedding day!!  Don’t get me wrong, this is every women’s dream to redecorate, and I’m taking advantage of it:)  I mean, I did just move half way across the world for my husband, so Jed is cool with the whole shopping thing, and the fact that we gave away almost everything we owned!!

Jed has been very supportive with all the decision-making!!

“Honey, do you like these colors?”

      “Yea, they look great.”

“Are you sure, I don’t know, I think this may be too dark.”

        “Yea, you may be right.”

“Really, you think so?  Well, now I don’t know what  color to go with!!”

“Honey, it will be fine.  We’ll take a sample color home and then go back as many  times as we need to, to get it right.  Don’t stress!”

This little scenario has happened multiple times and Jed has been very understanding and helpful.  I found it’s best to take one room at a time and go from there.  As well as, calling your Mom for help and running everything by her first!  Thanks Mom for the support!…………..I’m definately going with a glass top for the dining table thanks to you:)  I would have never thought of that.  It also helps when your In-Laws graciously accept packages that won’t ship to Guam, and then send them to us!!…………..Thanks so much Marc and Cyndi!  You both are great:)

This house is quickly becoming our “Home Sweet Home!!”

I LOVE………

I love many things in life, but God has given me a whole new appreciation for the beautiful creation He has made, those 10,000 or so years ago, by living on this Island of Guam!

I LOVE……. rainbows in the sky, when it has recently rained and the sun comes right back out to brighten our day:)  This happens a lot in Guam, as you can imagine!  This photo was taken, after an early morning rain shower, while the sun was still rising!……..This happened two days in a row, and only lasted about 15 min……..How lucky am I, to have seen it, and had a camera in reach, to show all of you:)

A rainbow represents a symbol that God made with Noah, during the time of the flood, “That the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh”.  Genesis 9:15 ESV

I LOVE……….The palm trees blowing in the wind on a sunny day, and coming home to find coconuts that have freshly fallen for the day!  It makes me feel like I’m on vacation:)  I wonder how long this feeling will last?………I hope forever:)

I LOVE……………..The sound of the Pacific Ocean waves, as they ripple and fold over, just enough to see a sea glass blue color hitting the rocks and cliffs at high tide!  This has to be one of my favorite sounds!…………It’s just soooo….calming:)

I LOVE…………………..All the vibrant native flowers, in many different shapes, colors, and sizes, on the island.  This one happens to be one of my favorites, and is everywhere on the island.  We actually have one that was already planted in our yard, but I didn’t know it, because there were no leaves or flowers on the plant when we moved in (I’m guessing one of the neighbor kids probably plucked everything off of it, and is just now starting to grow back)……….KIDS:)   I just recently realized it was my favorite flower, since it just sprouted new buds this week!………..The buds are pink instead of white, and I love it:)  These flowers make great lays, since the petals are so thick (popular to Hawaii).

I LOVE……………………..of course, the sunrises and sunsets!!  That’s a given.  They can be very colorful here, and it can be a beautiful ride in the car most evenings, watching the palm trees as a backdrop in the distance!  Jed and I love sitting on our new back porch, watching the sunrise come up together early in the morning, while we both sip on our delicious Folgers medium roast coffee:)…………..and maybe sip on a glass of wine while we watch the sunset together and ponder on the day we both had:)

I LOVE………………………………..The beach on the Air Force Base!  It’s somewhat secluded, in the fact that, only people on the Air Force Base can get to the beach.  It’s one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen………..with a lot of sand……….incredibly blue…………the beautiful waves being so close to the shore!  I know many fun times will be had here!!

This is only a glimpse of this side of the world!  There’s so much more to  share, so please check in every week, as Jed and I will upload new and exciting things we have experienced!  For those who are up for it, we would love for you to experience the amazing things this island has to offer!  COME SEE FOR YOURSELVES!…………..WE’RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE:)

Sweet Ride

We are proud owners of a 1998 BMW Z3, which is in mint condition and only has 45,000 miles built up!  By the way, that house you see to the left of the car is our home:)

We have a story to tell and It’s too good to pass up!  This is how it starts out, Once upon a nightmare……………..

I will fill in the blanks, but let me start off by reminding you of our current situation.  Most of you know we own a 2003 Kia Optima.  It has been a great car for us, but it’s almost 8 yrs. old and has over 100,000 miles on it currently.  After the journey it had by sea with the moving company, lets just say, it has seen better days.  The day Jed went to pick it up, it wouldn’t even start, and they did a number on the paint job in one specific area, but that’s another story!  Lets just say we were definitely willing to trade it in for another vehicle, or just get another vehicle and sell the Kia later down the road!  To be honest, Jed was hoping the car fell off into the Pacific Ocean, when they had called to say there was a problem with our vehicle on the day Jed went to pick it up (We weren’t that lucky)!

Meanwhile, I’ve been sitting at the house with nowhere to go!  Jed is using our Kia to get to work everyday.  They do provide him with a work vehicle, but the couple we are going to replace are still on the island, so it’s already being occupied.  They only have a couple of months left, so we’ll soon have two vehicles.

Jed and I have been going back and forth on the issue of motorcycle or another vehicle.  We came to the conclusion that it rains way too much here, and we really should get another vehicle, which means we would eventually end up with 3 vehicles and just end up selling the Kia when we could.  I could tell Jed agreed, but didn’t want to give up the idea of having his very own motorcycle:)

It all started by Jed looking on-line, primarily Craig’s List.  We would see some here and there, but they’re all so overpriced here on the island!  They all sell at way above Blue Book!  Anyway, we started off by looking on base first, because many people are coming and going here, and you can get some great deals.  We didn’t have much luck, but there was this black SUV going for 5,000 on the Navy base.  We were looking for a used car and not looking to spend much money, so when we saw pics of this SUV, we were excited and found out it had just sold.  She said if the finances don’t go through we can look at it, but that it was sold.

The next vehicle that looked interesting was a white SUV that was maybe a 2002.  We discovered this through a drive-by.  We called the number on the vehicle to try to test drive it one day, and as we were waiting for the lady to come to the lot, 3 different people drove up to look at this vehicle!  We couldn’t believe it!  When the lady got to the lot, she walked up to the other people standing by the car, and looking it over.    We were starting to think this was staged, but I think it really was coincidence.  We were trying to be patient and finally Jed walked up and asked about it.  She then realized we had been the ones that called her.  She was probably just as surprised as we were, when she got to the lot to see 4 different people looking at her car.  Everything looked great about it, but it didn’t have an airbag.  I guess the airbag randomly went off going over a bump, and could be risky to get fixed.  Well, that was out of the question, and we were back to the drawing board.  By the way, the lady called us that night saying the car had sold.  We didn’t mind:)

We received an email about the black SUV, and it looks like the finances didn’t go through, so we could come look at it.  I call her back and set up a time.  Jed calls back later to see if were still on, and asked a few questions as well.  Apparently, it has more cosmetic damage then we would like, and she doesn’t even have the title to the vehicle.  Jed says “well, how are we suppose to register the car”?  She says ” I don’t know”!  Car number 1 is off the table!

Car number 3, which was actually a truck, Jed found in the newspaper.  There was no picture, but Jed tried to get a description over the phone.  When I say “tried”, I’m referring to the man over the phone, who was Asian, and Jed could not understand!  Jed asks “Do you have the title”?  The Asian says “Of course I do, I own it”!  Jed says “Is there any rust”?  Asian says ” Oh, no rust, no rust anywhere, it’s in great condition”!  This simple conversation took over 1/2 an hour!  Jed was dreading calling him back to get directions to his house somewhere on the island.  After the back and forth on the phone, Jed and I finally found his house, as the sun was starting to set, and I kid you not, we walked right into a junkyard!  He had over 15 vehicles in the back of his house!  It was obvious he put this truck together with parts from the junkyard.  He was asking 3800 for this truck and Jed whispered in my ear “I wouldn’t give him 500″!  There was RUST all over this vehicle, and Jed said very politely “I’m going to think it over”.  I’m really glad Jed is able to carry a weapon, because we were back in an alley, where it was dark, and three local Asians were waiting to see if we wanted it.  I was so relieved when we got back into the car and started heading home!

By this point, we were starting to lose hope, and thinking to ourselves, maybe God just doesn’t want us to buy a second vehicle.  We were on our way to Church Sunday morning, just yesterday, when we passed a Baptist Church, with a sale sign in one of the vehicles.  Not just any vehicle, a BMW Z3, which Jed informed me James Bond used in one of his movies and made the vehicle a hit!  Jed took down the number and called him later that day.  It started off all to similar, when the man answered and Jed couldn’t understand him.   Him and his wife are Vietnamese and speak very poor English.  They wanted to get rid of the vehicle, because his wife was too large to fit in it!……….She hated the car!  The car only had 45,000 miles on it and was in mint condition.  They never drove it!!  It had a soft and hard top to go with the car, and the windows are all tinted, which is nice when you live in a very sunny climate, so they were asking a very reasonable price for the car.

That’s not even the most shocking part………………..

Jed went to go test drive the car, and yes, the title was there, the airbags were there, no rust anywhere, we were very surprised.  That’s not even the best part.  The funny thing is, the Vietnamese man wanted our vehicle.  He liked it so much he wanted to show his wife.  Jed says with a smile ” Sure, go ahead and take it”.  When it was all said and done, we just swapped cars with the guy that day, and he only asked for a little extra cash besides the car, that Jed just happen to have on him, in the exact amount of money he was asking for!  That’s just too weird, but a good weird!  No, Jed normally doesn’t just carry that much cash on him, but we were thinking about buying another vehicle that same weekend and it fell through.

This BMW is the best of both worlds, considering we can ride it on sunny days with the top down, which gives us the feel of riding a motorcycle, or put the hard top on when it’s a rainy day and get to where you need to go (nice and dry)!

All I can say is God is good!  I believe we got the better end of that deal!  Our Kia had many dings in the side of the car, the visor was broken and torn off, the paint was coming off in one area, it had 100,000 miles on it, and yet they still wanted it.  I guess his wife must have really liked our car.   I can’t help but think God played a major part in this all:)  Thank you Lord for our SWEET RIDE!!

It may have started off a nightmare, but had a fairytale ending:)

My New Passion

Just to clarify……….. This isn’t Jed’s new passion in life, obviously it’s mine!!  I mean, can you imagine Jed becoming a Pilates teacher!  It would be something right out of SNL!!..ha…ha!   Some of you may be wondering what have I gotten myself into, but I assure you, it’s legit and growing in popularity among the fitness circles!

As most of you know, I have been searching for something that INSPIRES ME…….Makes me a better person……….Something to help and inspire others…………basically work on a craft that I can be proud of, knowledgable in, and inspire others to become a better self, other than RETAIL!  I’m not sure working in a Guam retail store, trying to communicate with Asian tourists, would be the best fit for me!  It may even shorten my life expectancy a little:)  Drumroll please………..

Pilates Reformer

Joseph Pilates: The man who invented the Reformer

(December 9, 1883 – October 9, 1967)

Joe Pilates the man that started the whole pilates movement“I’m fifty years ahead of my time”   -Joseph Pilates.

German born Joseph Pilates was living in England, working as a circus performer and boxer, when he was placed in forced internment in England at the outbreak of WWI. While in the internment camp, he began to develop the floor exercises that evolved into what we now know as the Pilates mat work.

As time went by, Joseph Pilates began to work with rehabilitating detainees who were suffering from diseases and injuries. It was invention born of necessity that inspired him to utilize items that were available to him, like bed springs and beer keg rings, to create resistance exercise equipment for his patients. These were the unlikely beginnings of the equipment we use today, like the reformer and the magic circle.

I have always had a passion for fitness, but wasn’t quite sure what to specialize in!  Many respected people have said “You are most successful in life when you do something you love”.  I realize that not everyone has this luxury and for that I feel blessed.  I first stumbled into Pilates Reformer, while living in San Francisco, and took a free demo class at the gym, nearby Jed and I’s hotel.  I have heard of it through media, since it has grown in popularity with the stars, starting in the 1980′s, and is currently starting to catch on in many other locations.  I immediately fell in love with the concept, and I hoped these would appear in Guam, but new my chances were slim.  I knew I couldn’t start my own studio, since I didn’t know enough about the art.

After much time spent wondering what I could possibly do in Guam, and much prayer on this issue by many loved ones, this story I’m about to share is a prime example of God’s mighty hand at work!

The very first few days, on the Island of Guam, Jed and I  set ourselves up in a hotel and meet with Steve and Erika.  This is a couple, who we’ll soon be replacing on the Island, due to Jed’s work.  They were kind enough to invite us over for Christmas, we shared our stories, and had a great time!  In the process, Erika knew how important fitness was to me, and she suggested I meet her Pilates instructor Pepe, and thought I could go to a few classes with her and maybe even work with him.  I thought it all sounded great!!  Then she used the term Pilates Reformer?  I said ” Did you just say Pilates Reformer instructor”!   Sure enough, Pepe was a Pilates reformer instructor, which I had just recently come to love and thought what are the odds, since Guam wasn’t a big city!  Wow, God really showed me!!  Lets just say, I am currently taking reformer classes with Pepe and training to be his apprentice, untill I am ready for my own clients, and the rest is history!!

My dream is to open a Pilates Reformer Studio one day, and teach others what I have come to respect and love as an art form of fitness:)  I am hoping to gain as much knowledge from Pepe, and work along side of him teaching others as possible, while getting a degree in nutrition and fitness in the 3 to 4 years that we’ll be here.  I plan to take this knowledge with me wherever I go, and open a studio when we settle down in the states!!  It’s amazing how the Lord works through other people in life.  The fact that Erika’s into nutrition, by introducing me to Melaleuca, which is a great line of over 300 products made of all natural and safe products for the home and body; as well as, having an interest in Pilates.  Not just Pilates, but Pilates reformer!  That is just amazing to me:)

Two Lovers Point

“These life lessons will only make you a stronger person on the inside” ……..This is a quote my Mom likes to use, especially when I was going through High School:)  Thanks for the encouragement, Mom!!

May the Lord and DEA go before you.

It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” -Deuteronomy 31:8 ESV

The above verse held special meaning for Alyssa and I, particularly while I was in DC and Alyssa was in Maine/Ohio. I know it was a constant prayer for Alyssa that God would organize things in such a way that we would arrive on Base and see his handy-work organize our move-in.

During our first couple of weeks here the path that was laid for us resembled a barely walked Maine mountain trail with little more than the occasional white splash o’ paint on the tree trunk to let us know we were heading in the right direction. It hardly seemed God had steamrolled a path with landing lights along each side and a large neon sign at the end flashing, “Keep going straight!”

Then things began to change.

I received an invite for a New-Years party that was being thrown by a leading Prosecutor for all the Federal Special Agents on the island.

Now this wasn’t the typical New Years party that you might expect a bunch of Feds to be having in a shady bar with low light, scantily clad women, and an occasional drunken brawl.

It took place at 2 in the afternoon.

We toasted sparkling cider.

The lead attorney lead us in a prayer thanking God for the good year and the food we were about to eat.

The first two guys I had the good fortune to sit next to while I enjoyed finger food and cider happened to be DEA agents who had recently moved onto Guam themselves.

How it came up, I don’t know, but we began talking about Base and the trouble I had getting on the first couple of days. Then I found out they recently moved on base a couple of weeks earlier.

The floodgates of questions began flowing forth and we talked for a good hour about everything they did to organize Base housing, gain access cards, and perhaps most important, get access for their wives and children. After all, as nice as Base housing is, if Alyssa can’t ever leave without me escorting her off and on, it would begin to feel like prison after a while. It was nice talking with the guys, hearing that we weren’t the only ones running into barriers. They had run into a few themselves shortly before. After some letters, phone calls, and some elbow grease, they had everything they needed.

So with their advice, business cards, and my own determination in hand I ventured onto base the following day and used a magical phrase that, thanks to the Good Lord sending these Agents ahead of me, worked better at opening doors than Harry Potter himself shouting “Alohomora” would have worked.

“Nice to meet you, I’m the new Fed living on Base. A couple of weeks ago you did this for the DEA guys, now do the same for me.”

And whaddyaknow. It actually worked.

Today: Lottery. Tomorrow: Bankrupt.

Balcony view from Waikiki, Hawaii

“It’s like today you win the lottery, tomorrow you’ll go bankrupt.  But don’t worry, wait a day and you’ll win the lottery again.”

That’s what it’s been like so far living on Guam.

We flew in Sunday night and decided to go by the housing office on base Monday morning.  I figured by Monday afternoon I’d be arresting bad guys.

2 weeks later and we are living in the very beautiful, though drastically overpriced, “Alupang Towers”.  And no, Alupang Towers is not located on the Airforce Base.  Only another temporary place to live while Andersen Air Force Base is worked out.  I’ve lost track of how many places we’ve called “home” in the 7 years we’ve been married.   If we are able to get on base Monday and live there for our time here, that will be the longest time we’ve ever lived in one place.  Who knows, we may even paint a wall;-)

As I look back over the past two weeks one of the things that sticks out the most was attending a small Baptist Church a few miles down the road.  They, like many Churches around America where involved in a building project.  Unlike many Churches in America, it wasn’t a Multi Million dollar building renovation.  Nor a Million dollar new sanctuary across town.  Their building project which we had the good fortune of witnessing completion of, was… a sign.

Now, this wasn’t just any sign, it was an LCD sign that would flash the time and temperature outside as well.  As the congregation stood around the sign holding hands getting ready to pray God would bless the sign the Paster turned it on.

Welcome to Calvary Baptist…….

11:08 PM……..

-3,708 F…….

Ok, so I guess all the technical “bugs” weren’t worked out.   I think I heard someone mutter, “I told you it would be a cold day in hell when we finished this building project.”

All of us started laughing.

Welcome to Guam.
